About SMSF Genius

SMSF Genius is the group’s SMSF audit business. Every self-managed super fund must be audited each year by an approved SMSF auditor before its annual return is lodged, and SMSF Genius runs that process online, for funds anywhere in Australia.

It works with accountants who look after many funds, and with trustees who need an audit of their own fund. Documents are shared through a secure online platform, audit queries are answered online, and the report is delivered online. It also helps with setting up new funds.

An SMSF audit must be independent of whoever prepared the fund’s accounts. Advice on whether an SMSF suits you, and how it should invest, must come from a licensed financial adviser: in the group, that is Wealth Mantra.

Working with SMSF Genius

  1. Upload the fund’s documents

    Financial statements, member statements, bank statements for the full year, investment records, trustee declarations and the investment strategy.

  2. The audit

    An approved SMSF auditor reviews the fund’s financial statements and whether it followed the super rules.

  3. Answer any queries online

    The auditor’s questions are raised and cleared online.

  4. Receive the signed report

    The signed audit report is delivered, so the annual return can be lodged.

  • Appoint the auditor in time

    Trustees must appoint an approved auditor at least 45 days before the fund’s annual return is due.

  • Independence

    An auditor can’t audit a fund whose financial statements they or their firm prepared, unless the work was only routine or mechanical and the threats to independence are reduced to an acceptable level.

  • Advice comes from a licensed adviser

    Whether to have an SMSF, and how it invests, is personal financial advice, which must come from a licensed adviser.
